Painting a selfie in the style of Picasso? Surely you can’t go wrong! The Paint and Sip Co run sessions quite regularly at various locations and last weekend I popped along to the event running at Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead to see what it was all about.

We arrived 10 minutes early to grab a drink, apron and a seat. They suggest you arrive, sip and socialise so why not? Our canvas, paint and paint brushes were all ready and waiting.

Starting with the blank canvas we were given a choice of several paintings to copy and inspire us or the option to paint a selfie using a photograph on our phones.  The expert teachers then guided us step by step and gave one to one hints and tips for the next 90 mins to 2 hours in a real fun and casual class. We started by drawing a rough pencil outline on our canvas, which we followed from the painting or photograph. From there, we were instructed to build up the painting, starting with the background, moving on to light colours and then dark colours. The teachers were always on hand to give encouragement and help while we relaxed with music, snacks, drinks and lots of fun until we completed our masterpieces which we could take home and keep for ever.

There were a wide range of abilities, from complete beginners to more established painters. There was also a large family group in our class with ages ranging from 10 years old to 60 years old. It would also be a great activity to do with a bunch of friends, and they offer quite a few different types of parties, including glow in the dark and kids parties. The prices are on their website, and you can also book your tickets online. Our event cost £14.95 per person but some events run an offer of 3 for 2 tickets and there are also discounts for NHS.

They are also available for private hire, birthdays, hen nights, corporate events and Christmas so plenty to choose from or pop along to one of their scheduled events if you just fancy having a go.
